“My children, my mother, and I will be spending spring break at your beach house,” my daughter-in-law texted. “Make sure the refrigerator is stocked before Thursday.”

Part 2: The Money She Thought She Was Entitled To

It had started with money.

About two years earlier, Vanessa had called me late one evening.

Not to ask how I was.

Not to check on me.

She wanted to know how much I had in my savings account.

I remember staring at my phone for several seconds before answering.

“Why would you need to know that?”

There was a pause.

Then she laughed.

“Oh, Clara. I’m just asking.”

“You’ve never asked me that before.”

“I’m your daughter-in-law. We’re family.”

Family.
