Only one boy asked me to prom. Everyone laughed and said he must’ve been paid. Then police walked into the gym.

Part 2: The Truth Behind Caleb’s Invitation

“No, this can’t be true!”

My voice echoed through the gym.

“Caleb, how could you do this to me?”

Caleb stood completely still.

His face had lost all its color.

The police officer looked at me, then at Caleb.

“Ma’am, I think you deserve to know what happened.”

I shook my head.

“No. He invited me here. He danced with me. He held my hand all night. Why would he do something like this?”

Caleb finally spoke.

“I didn’t.”

His voice cracked.

“I swear, I didn’t.”

The officer sighed.

“Caleb, you need to come with us.”

“Wait!” I cried. “What did he do?”

The officer looked uncomfortable.

“Someone used Caleb’s name and identity to make several large payments to students at this school.”

The gym erupted into whispers.

“What?”

“Payments?”

“Bribery?”

I stared at Caleb.

He looked at me desperately.

“Please believe me.”

I couldn’t understand.

“Who would pay people?”

The officer pulled out his phone.

“We found messages between several students discussing tonight.”

He turned the screen toward the principal.

The principal’s face became serious.

“Are you saying the students were paid to humiliate her?”

The officer nodded.

My heart stopped.

“What?”

Everyone went silent.

The officer continued.

“We believe tonight’s bullying was deliberately organized.”

I looked around the gym.

The girls who had laughed at my dress were suddenly staring at the floor.

The boy who had shouted the “charity event” joke wouldn’t even look at me.

I whispered,

“Why?”

The officer looked at Caleb.

“That is what we’re trying to determine.”

Caleb suddenly stepped forward.

“I know why.”

Everyone turned toward him.

He looked at me.

“I asked her to prom because I wanted everyone to see something.”

My heart pounded.

“See what?”

He took a breath.

“You.”

I stared at him.

“You wanted everyone to see me?”

“Yes.”

He looked down.

“But I didn’t know they’d do this.”

One of the officers interrupted.

“Caleb, we need to go.”

Caleb shook his head.

“Not until she knows.”

The officer hesitated.

Caleb turned toward me.

“Your birthmark isn’t something you should be ashamed of.”

I felt tears rolling down my cheeks.

“You don’t understand.”

“I do.”

“No, you don’t!”

My voice broke.

“You’ve never had everyone stare at you. You’ve never had people whisper when you walk into a room.”

Caleb’s eyes filled with tears.

“You’re right.”

He paused.

“But I’ve had people pretend to like me because they wanted something from me.”

I looked at him.

“What does that have to do with me?”

He reached into his jacket.

Then he pulled out a small envelope.

He handed it to me.

“My mom gave me this yesterday.”

I opened it with trembling hands.

Inside was a photograph.

It showed a young woman standing beside a little girl.

I stared at the picture.

The woman looked strangely familiar.

Then I saw the handwriting on the back.

“Give this to her when she’s ready to know the truth.”

I looked at Caleb.

“Who is she?”

He swallowed.

“My mother.”

My eyes widened.

“And the little girl?”

He didn’t answer.

I looked closer.

The little girl had the same birthmark.

The exact same shape.

The exact same location.

My hands began shaking.

“Caleb…”

He whispered,

“That little girl is you.”

The entire gym seemed to disappear.

“What?”

Caleb stepped closer.

“My mother knew your mother.”

I could barely breathe.

“She did?”

“They were best friends.”

I looked down at the photograph again.

“Then why have I never heard about her?”

“Because something happened twenty years ago.”

The principal stepped forward.

“Caleb, what are you talking about?”

He looked at the police officers.

“My mother discovered that someone had been stealing money from a charity for children with facial differences.”

The officer’s expression changed.

“Caleb…”

“My mother tried to expose them.”

He looked at me.

“And your mother helped her.”

I felt dizzy.

“What happened to my mother?”

Caleb’s eyes filled with tears.

“She was threatened.”

I shook my head.

“No…”

“She was told that if she went to the police, you’d be taken away from her.”

I covered my mouth.

“That doesn’t make sense.”

Caleb nodded.

“I know.”

Then he looked toward the crowd.

“But there’s one thing everyone here doesn’t know.”

He pointed toward the students who had been laughing at me.

“The person who paid them to humiliate you…”

He paused.

“…isn’t a student.”

The gym became completely silent.

I stared at him.

“Then who?”

Caleb looked toward the entrance.

A woman was standing there.

My mother.

But she wasn’t alone.

Beside her stood a man in a dark suit.

The moment my mother saw him, she froze.

Caleb whispered,

“That’s the man my mother has been afraid of for twenty years.”

The man smiled.

Then he looked directly at me.

And said,

“Hello, sweetheart.”

I had never seen him before.

But somehow…

he knew my name.
