My Husband’s Final Wish Was to Become an Organ Donor — But After He D.i.e.d, His Doctor Rushed After Me and Said, “”Before He Was Gone, He Made Me Promise I’d Give You This.””

Part 2: The Secret Nolan Took to His Grave

I stared at the object in Dr. Vale’s hand.

It was a small, sealed envelope.

My name was written across the front.

ELENA.

My fingers began to tremble.

“Why would Nolan leave this with you?”

Dr. Vale glanced toward the hospital doors.

“Because he didn’t trust anyone else with it.”

My heart sank.

“What does that mean?”

He lowered his voice.

“Nolan made me promise that I would give this to you only after he was gone.”

I reached for the envelope.

But Dr. Vale didn’t let go immediately.

“There is something you need to understand before you open it.”

“What?”

“Nolan wasn’t completely honest with you about his condition.”

My breath caught.

“What are you talking about?”

Dr. Vale finally released the envelope.

“For the last few weeks, Nolan knew something you didn’t.”

I stared at him.

“Was his illness worse than you told me?”

“No.”

He shook his head.

“It’s something else.”

My fingers tightened around the envelope.

“Then tell me.”

Dr. Vale looked toward the hallway.

“I can’t.”

“Why?”

“Because Nolan specifically told me that you had to hear it from him.”

I almost laughed through my tears.

“Doctor, he’s dead.”

“I know.”

His voice cracked.

“And that’s why this is so difficult.”

I looked down at the envelope.

There was no hospital logo.

No medical information.

Just my name.

And underneath it, in Nolan’s handwriting, were four words:

DON’T TRUST THE PAPERS.

My stomach twisted.

“What papers?”

Dr. Vale didn’t answer.

I tore open the envelope.

Inside was a single photograph.

I stared at it.

It was Nolan.

But he wasn’t alone.

He was standing outside a building I didn’t recognize beside a woman I’d never seen before.

On the back of the photograph was a date.

Three weeks before Nolan died.

My heart began racing.

“Who is she?”

Dr. Vale closed his eyes.

“I was afraid you’d ask that.”

“Who is she?”

“She came to the hospital several times.”

“Why?”

Dr. Vale looked directly at me.

“Because she was a match.”

I froze.

“A match for what?”

He didn’t answer.

Instead, he reached into his coat pocket and pulled out another document.

“This is why Nolan wanted to become an organ donor.”

I stared at the paper.

At first, the words blurred through my tears.

Then one sentence became clear.

ORGAN DONATION: PRIORITY RECIPIENT REQUEST.

I looked up.

“What does this mean?”

Dr. Vale swallowed.

“Nolan didn’t simply want to donate his organs.”

“He wanted them to go to someone specific.”

My mouth went dry.

“Who?”

The doctor hesitated.

Then he said:

“His daughter.”

I almost dropped the paper.

“Our daughter?”

“No.”

His answer came softly.

“Not the baby you’re carrying.”

I couldn’t breathe.

“Nolan had another daughter?”

Dr. Vale nodded.

“She’s sixteen.”

The room seemed to spin.

I grabbed the nearest chair.

“Nolan never told me he had a child.”

“I know.”

“How could he hide an entire daughter from me?”

Dr. Vale looked devastated.

“Because he believed telling you would put both of you in danger.”

My hand instinctively moved to my pregnant belly.

“Danger from who?”

Before Dr. Vale could answer, his phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

The color drained from his face.

“Who is it?” I whispered.

He didn’t answer.

The phone stopped ringing.

Then immediately started again.

This time, Dr. Vale answered.

“Hello?”

He listened.

His expression changed completely.

“What?”

A pause.

“No. That’s impossible.”

He looked at me.

Then slowly lowered the phone.

“What happened?” I asked.

He whispered:

“They found Nolan’s daughter.”

I felt a strange sense of relief.

“Where is she?”

Dr. Vale’s eyes filled with fear.

“She isn’t missing.”

“Then what?”

He looked down at the photograph in my hand.

“She came here.”

My heart stopped.

“Here?”

He nodded.

“She was standing outside the hospital when Nolan died.”

I stared at him.

“Why didn’t she come inside?”

“Because Nolan told her not to.”

“Why?”

Dr. Vale took a shaky breath.

“Because he was afraid someone was watching her.”

I suddenly heard footsteps behind me.

I turned.

A teenage girl was standing several feet away.

She had tears running down her face.

She looked directly at me.

Then at my stomach.

And whispered:

“You’re Nolan’s wife.”

I couldn’t speak.

She took one trembling step forward.

“My name is Sophie.”

Then she looked at Dr. Vale.

“You promised my father you wouldn’t tell her until he was gone.”

Dr. Vale nodded.

Sophie reached into her jacket.

“I brought something too.”

She pulled out a second envelope.

“This was supposed to be given to you if Nolan died.”

My hands were shaking.

I took it.

But before I could open it, Sophie suddenly grabbed my arm.

Her eyes widened.

“Wait.”

“What?”

She looked toward the hospital entrance.

“There is one thing my father never knew.”

“What?”

Sophie whispered:

“The person who has been following me…”

She looked at the security doors.

“…isn’t looking for me.”

Her eyes moved to my belly.

“They’re looking for your baby.”
