My Husband Thought Being Eight Months Pregnant, Raising Two Children, and Depending on Him Financially Meant I Would Never Leave

My husband looked at me one night and said something I’ll never forget.

“You wouldn’t survive without me.”

I was eight months pregnant.

Our two children were asleep upstairs.

And I had less than $200 in my bank account.

He knew all of that.

That’s why he said it.

He thought those facts made me powerless.

He thought because I hadn’t worked outside the home in years, I had nowhere to go.

He thought because I was carrying his third child, I would tolerate anything.

And most of all…

he thought I was too afraid to leave.

He was wrong.

But he didn’t realize how wrong he was until the morning he came downstairs and found the house completely empty.

Not abandoned.

Not destroyed.

Empty.

The children’s bedrooms were cleared.

My clothes were gone.

The baby’s hospital bag was gone.

And sitting on the kitchen counter was his wedding ring.

Beside it was a single envelope.

His name was written across the front.

Inside were only six words:

“You were right. I can’t stay.”

But what he didn’t know was that I hadn’t made that decision that morning.

I’d been preparing for it for six months.

And the reason would eventually make him wish he’d never said those words to me.
